Jan van Eyck painted several portraits of people wearing a chaperon, a common headdress in the Middle Ages. A well known example is Portrait of a Man with a Red Turban , which is probably a self portrait. In this painting, Van Eyck employed the chaperon as a turban. The chaperon was a hood that fell to the shoulders
